Moving from the Mode of Research to the Mode of Synthesize during the ChangeMaker Innovation Process ™ provides an opportunity to narrow the focus to an immediate and specific problem.
Define an area that is large enough for innovation, but bounded enough to enhance success. Solving a smaller part of the larger problem is worth the effort!
How can I narrow my focus based on synthesized information? What is my point of view?
One must learn to acknowledge what they already know (schema) and then identify how their knowledge has changed because of discoveries in the Research Mode. When they are given an opportunity to combine their schema with their new knowledge, they will be better equipped to narrow their focus and acknowledge their point of view.
Using the 3-Column Notes graphic organizer may be a great first step. This allows a person to chart out “What I already know (schema) and “What I Learned from Research” and “My NEW Combined Knowledge/Schema”.
The purpose of the Mode of Synthesize is to eventually arrive at crafting a “Point of View Statement”. This is essential to theChangeMaker Process ™ of innovation because it clearly conveys the problem an individual is striving to solve.
Through discoveries and insights from the Research and Synthesize mode, one can write a “Point of View Statement” that reframes their problem, while also encouraging solution ideas.
This is be a helpful, foundational tool to be used throughout any design challenge or problem solving journey.
