Innovation is a process and not a singular event. One may ask why start with the mode of RESEARCH and the answer is simple. To innovate effectively, one must ask an abundance of questions. In order to understand the actual problem or opportunity at hand, RESEARCH becomes essential!
Ask & Listen:
Active listening and curiosity are practiced and enhanced by design thinking. Interview others and interrogate reality while using empathy. What is the problem/opportunity?
Innovation design thinking takes a unique approach and identifies the hidden needs of the user, thus embarking on a customer discovery journey.
Leading with empathy moves beyond listening skills to understanding perspectives and fully engaging whether you agree or disagree. Showing compassion for human trials coupled with care to help solve problems and create opportunities is authentic, empathetic leadership in action and it enhances the customer discovery journey.
Filling out an Empathy Map may be a great next step.
Gather, understand, and learn new information. Identify resources for your project/process. Who and what can help you?
Recognize the current means you have and who can help you press on toward social change and widespread impact.
Processing using the graphic organizer called 3-Column Notes may be helpful using the questions of: “What current means do I have?” “Who can help me?” “What next steps can I take?”
Spending time in the RESEARCH mode will prepare a person for sense-making from exploration and discovery and will also help to define the problem effectively to move on in the innovation design thinking process.
