Incubate to Innovate is developing support to assist schools and districts in planning and implementing thoughtful responses to student learning loss due to COVID-19. Learning loss is a phenomenon that has occurred thanks to the global pandemic and seeking to return to “normal” may continue to widen opportunity gaps for students and/or inadvertently support inequity in education.
This blog is meant to be a catalyst of thought as every school and district is different and facing unique needs and circumstances.
Consider these 6 strategies as an innovative place to start:
1. Determine learning standards that were missed that are foundational to future learning: The learning loss focus starts here!
2. Move past content consumption to skill application: Give students prototyping opportunities tied to standards so they can create versus just consume content.
3. Consider creative scheduling for the upcoming school year: Build extra daily help into the schedule before and after school and even on the weekends.
4. Pivot formative assessments so that they are quicker and more meaningful: Any assessment given should immediately inform teaching practice and personalization of learning for students.
5. Create a list of free, adaptive digital opportunities that can allow parents to partner with the school: Distance and online learning can still exist for great purposes after schools are fully open.
6. Design opportunities for student voice and choice leading to greater JOY and ownership of learning: Now more than ever before learning experiences need to be personalized for students, whether online or in person, so student engagement and ownership increases to address learning losses.
